Aurelie Sheehan is the author of a short story collection, Jack Kerouac Is Pregnant (Dalkey Archive Press), and two novels, The Anxiety of Everyday Objects and History Lesson for Girls (Viking/Penguin). She is the director of the creative writing program at the University of Arizona. “Mermaid” is #99 in a sequence of prose pieces called “One Hundred Histories.”
