“The Orange Curtain” by Vonn Sumner

© 2003 Vonn Sumner

“Even though I paint in what some might call a realistic manner, I am not really interested in realism at all. I want to make paintings that fictionalize reality and make fiction real. I find most exciting the area where the boundary between realism and fiction is blurred and even ignored—then, the possibilities for invention really start opening up. Fiction deals with the mysterious, the magical, the absurd, even the mystical, in a way that other more direct ways of speaking cannot. In a way, the role of the painter and the role of the fiction writer are the same: to invent a parallel world, one that follows its own set of rules. With our own realities so frail and fleeting, telling each other stories can be a way of expanding and enriching our individual experiences.”
